Paul Smith : This is a children's novel that was inspired by a search, by the author, into her family background. It is a book that every parent or grandparent should read to their offspring. A family of children are confined to the workhouse when their parents die, a fate that befell many orphans at the start of the 20th century (did you know that workhouses were abolished in Britain only in 1942).
David, the eldest child, from London, is taken in by a mining family in Yorkshire and is employed by the mine owner to work underground. The story tells of his plight and his desire to reunite his separated family. The tale is well written, characters well formed and story unfolds at a good pace. It is poignant in places and pulls at the heart strings and one hopes for a happy ending but you'll have to buy and read the book to find out if this happens.
