Venice Asquith is the granddaughter of both an earl and a viscount, but this has not prevented her from wanting to train as a doctor. In the London of the 1920’s, women physicians are not completely accepted by the medical establishment and Venice has an uphill struggle to realise her ambition.
Meeting the mysterious Tristan Cavell throws her into turmoil. She is not only physically attracted to him, but also intrigued by the secrets he seems to keep. Tristan comes from the poverty of the East End of London and is a veteran of the Great War. He has done well for himself and owns a lucrative hotel and nightclub. But he also owns a casino, an activity that is on the fringes of the law. He believes Venice is out of his league and that her family would never accept him.
However, Venice disagrees and she decides that she must either become his wife or his mistress. Throwing caution to the wind, this decision is made on the toss of the dice and it’s a decision she soon comes to regret.
When Venice becomes involved in a tragic incident concerning Tristan’s business partner Larry Johnson and Larry’s girlfriend Martha, she discovers another side to Tristan’s nature; a side that alarms her. Although Tristan only wants to protect her, she finds his behaviour controlling and suffocating.
Venice is unaware that her grandmother’s secret is waiting in the wings to bring terrifying consequences. She and Tristan will have to face these consequences together and this will test their love for each other. The tangle of echoes from the past will change their lives even though the events occurred many years before they were born.
