ABHF: Oiling the Wheels by Peter Caunt

Oiling the Wheels is a Fantasy novel with Steampunk overtones.

The city of Bafeld-Inwic had undergone a rapid expansion in technology and fostered an expectation in the population that the good times had finally arrived now that the roads were not forever covered in horse dung. The trouble was that it then experienced a heavy crash, literally, as the chief artificer, Abel, and his apprentice, Isaac, attempted to escape the capital in a prototype flying machine taking with them a good selection of the spare parts in their luggage, and knowledge in their heads. Isaac dragged himself and his bag from the wreckage of the flyer and went on the run, or rather limp, as he had to borrow one of Abel's metal legs.

Wilhelm, the newly appointed Captain of the Guard and Cardel, the new Chief Scribe are tasked with saving the city of Bafeld-Inwic from a threatened invasion while rewriting the history to make King Edwan appear in a somewhat heroic light.

Meanwhile, Queen Annel has to balance the needs of the city, her increasingly deranged husband and her wide reaching network of spies to maintain some sort of order in a world that is changing more rapidly than any of them ever thought possible.
