Stories about George
by Nick Morrice

I loved the William stories when I was young: Just William, William and the Outlaws, etc about a mischievous 11-year-old schoolboy and his band of three male school friends. She published her first collection in 1922 and then wrote 38 other William books, and the last one, William The Lawless, was published posthumously in 1970. I still enjoy listening to Martin Jarvis reading them on Radio Four.

So I decided to have a go at writing some stories in a similar vein myself, updating them to present times and including two girls in the
gang. They call themselves the Warriors, and instead of Richmal Crompton's setting of Lancashire, I have (of course) chosen Yorkshire. I
let my hair down, as it were, in writing them, stretching my imagination as far as possible into the realms of adventurous fantasy and time
travel. They were great fun to write and I hope some of that enthusiasm will come across to today's young reading public.

I would be very grateful if you would consider spending £8 and buying a copy to give to your grandchild for a birthday or Christmas present. They are
pure escapism and, I believe, harmless fun.

George Bond, a high-spirited eleven year old, dreams of becoming a warrior and leading a more adventurous life. With the help of his close friends, adventures seem to come their way naturally, but their warrior abilities are taxed to the limit as they take on villains and thieves, wild water, angry farmers and a haunted house.

George's vivid nocturnal dreams come to life in increasingly bizarre ways. They take him to worlds in which famous real and mythological figures, from Leonardo da Vinci to James Bond, the Minotaur to the Buddha, make unexpected appearances. Uncle Stanley's time-machine transports all six warriors to distant lands and times, in the past and future, where they have many extraordinary and life-changing encounters.

These twenty stories about four boys and two girls, starting in the Yorkshire Dales but extending into faraway exotic countries, will undoubtedly entertain and inspire young readers and their parents.
