“Regardless of whether that which is most valued be wealth, or love: If it be true love most valued, it may cost riches and its accoutrements; but such a price would be nothing compared to the gain. If it be wealth most valued however, it will cost a great deal more in the end, I dare say.”- Margaret Westford

The Price of Freedom is a work of historical fiction, set in England, 1788. It is the first book in the Northing Trilogy. Adriana, a fisherman’s daughter free of care and societal restraints, has a chance encounter with James, the son of a wealthy merchant, which changes the course of her life forever. Their secret childhood friendship is tested when their fathers form an alliance at sea, threatening to expose them both to the censure of the world. But that’s not the only secret in this family, for they are more than what they seem: When her mother is unexpectedly restored to her family, her position, and the means to see her daughters well-established, she is nonetheless reluctant to burden her daughters with the deceitful security of riches which she’s come to mistrust.
Unaware of this change in the Northing’s cir***stances, James’s father arranges for Adriana to be taken on as a relative’s companion. She is thrust into the intoxicating and treacherous society of London, and James is thrust into a dilemma: Will he give in to his father’s increasing pressure to marry the woman of choice, or follow his heart, regardless the cost? Adriana must choose between the intoxication of the idea of marriage, or holding out for love. When their secret is at last revealed, it’s too late to go back, and costly to go forward.
