The northern islands of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (as it is currently known), in particular the Nation of Scotland, are places that I have wanted to visit most of my life. 2019 was to be the year, and May and June the months. After the warmest Easter on record, May took a turn for the worse with the early part of the month seeing winter temperatures, sharp frosts and biting arctic winds. More like March, it was in like a lion and we were hoping that the lamb would show up soon to moderate the weather but we were to be disappointed. Our journey started on Saturday, 11th May and we were to take a week to reach Scrabster, a port situated on Thurso Bay, where we would catch the ferry to Orkney, docking on the archipelago at Stromness. This is a personal story about a journey, our love of Scotland and a passion for wildlife and (mostly) feral places away from population centres.
